John H. Armstrong was born in Champaign, Illinois. He received his law degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1960 with Phi Delta Phi honors. John has worked in oil and gas law, real estate, and estate planning in and around Coles County for over fifty years. He and Attorney Janet Grove have worked together since 1985, beginning at Craig & Craig, then in 1996 as Armstrong & Grove, and at Hefner, Eberspacher, Tapella, Armstrong, Grove, Jones & Britton LLC. Since 2011, John has worked in partnership at the law office of Armstrong & Grove LLC in Mattoon.
John is a member of the Coles-Cumberland Bar Association (President, 1976-1977), the Illinois State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He has been part of and chaired several committees on mineral law and environmental control law. John, after many years of contributions, is an honorary trustee of the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation, member of the Illinois Land Title Association, and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Council. He is the author of several book chapters on oil, gas, and minerals published by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
John’s community activities include serving on the boards of the City of Mattoon Library (1968-1985) and currently the Tarble Arts Center at Eastern Illinois University.
